The GaN on silicon manufacturer was founded in 2015 and produces eight-inch wafers at two sites in China. The company’s high (650V) and low voltage, normally off GaN HEMTs are used in automotive lidar, data centres, cloud computing, electric vehicles (EVchargers, laptops and other portable devices, mobile phones, chargers and adapters.

At the exhibition and conference in Nuremberg, Germany, Dr Denis Marcon, general manager, Innoscience Europe, presented on the topic of barriers preventing the widespread adoption of GaN-based power transistors. He said the industry faced two obstacles – price and security of supply (i.e. mass manufacturing).

The company has a capacity of 10,000 eight-inch wafers per month and has said that it wants to grow this to 70,000 by 2025.

Commenting on the agreement, Nigel Watts, vice president of WPG EMEA, said: “Product is available now and lead times are far better than the traditional silicon alternatives. Design now and manufacture sooner”.

Distributor WPG was named as the world’s largest electronics distributor by Gartner in March 2022.
